The Client
Prysmian Group
The Prysmian Group is an Italian multinational corporation headquartered in Milan that manufactures electric power transmission and telecommunications cables and systems. It operates in 50 countries with 88 plants and a global workforce of over 19,000. The main UK manufacturing and production facility is in Eastleigh, Southampton. PSP was invited to attend a meeting to discuss options to address the issues they were facing with their case-making.
Main Points
- The volume of packing was due to increase with projections showing a 50% increase.
- Prysmian did not want the responsibility or the cost implications of new employees.
- The product needed to be packed as soon as they reached the end of the production line otherwise they would have required storage, an extra cost they were not willing to absorb therefore they needed full-time packers to work on the production line alongside their own team.
- Require the highest quality of cases.
- A lack of storage space meant that they could not hold a large number of stock cases.
The Solution
- PSP Fareham manufacture all the wooden cases and deliver to Prysmian on a weekly basis or as/when required (store stock cases at PSP).
- PSP provide a team of 4 fully trained packers to work full time on the production line at Prysmian, they are also responsible for picking the components and packing them into the PSP cases.
- These employees are trained to the high standards expected by PSP Packing and quality is monitored by the production manager at Prysmian.
- PSP deal with all the costs & risks, including pensions and sickness, and provide cover for employee holidays and sickness so that no production time is wasted.
- PSP meet with the team at Prysmian on a monthly basis to check production requirements, providing back up from our Fareham base should it be required.

“In 2009/2010 the Packing contract for Cable Accessories was put to tender, Several suppliers including the current supplier at the time “Tuplins” were invited to submit proposals.
Premier Shipping and Packing (PSP) was selected as it appeared that they could offer many improvements and benefits over “Tuplins” and the others. As with any change, there is a risk but PSP proved to be a helpful dedicated Team and we saw many improvements as soon as the partnership began. Over the years PSP has provided us with additional services which has helped us to improve processes within our Business.
It is a partnership that I trust and can reply upon, nothing is too much, I know that I am in safe hands. As we move into the future, I am confident that as opportunities arise, PSP will provide further services to enhance and strengthen our Business.”
